  Hector Peterson
a symbol of the struggle

Arts & Culture projects envisioned by Mr. Hattingh include the 80th Birthday Celebration statue of Nelson Mandela, the Hector Peterson Memorial and the Celebration of Hope (2004) statue of Nelson Mandela which has made it to the cover of TIME magazine and transformed the financial heart of South Africa, Sandton Square into Nelson Mandela Square. The desk top replica was launched at Trafalgar Square in London.

A little more then 11 years ago Nelson Mandela walked out of prison and into presidency bringing to birth a new democracy. Ten years after it was first opened, Sandton Square is now complete. Sandton Square at Sandton City has been renamed NELSON MANDELA SQUARE at Sandton City, following the unveiling on March 31st, of a six metre bronze statue of a man who is revered throughout the world. The intention is to honour the former president’s vision of a free and just South Africa. But also to create a focal point where local and foreign tourists can contemplate the events that lead to the creation of the miracle of the Rainbow Nation.

The young warrior Hector Peterson, only 13 years old, took up his place on the battlefield, fighting for African culture. He was cynically shot by the apartheid police. The picture of his lifeless body being carried by Mpuyisa Makubi, accompanied by Hector's sister Antoinette, became a symbol of the struggle against apartheid.
